Challenge
Parents may face no more stressful time than raising their adolescent daughters. Today, parents have to know how to address the physical and emotional changes of adolescence, but also how to help their daughters stay safe using technology, saying no to drugs, and understanding the unhealthy messages sometimes included in current songs and TV shows. To help parents talk about these topics and others with their pre-teen girls, the Office on Women’s Health developed a new Communication Skills Building Kit for Parents of Adolescent Girls that aims to improve parent-child communication on difficult transition issues of early adolescence. The kit has two versions; one for African American audiences and one for Hispanic audiences. Each kit includes a facilitator guidebook, parenting fact sheet and an interactive DVD. Noral has been contracted to assist the OWH in marketing and disseminating the kits to workshop leaders who will use the resources directly with parents in their communities.
Tactics
Noral has developed and is currently implementing an integrated strategy of effective outreach tactics to engage organizations who mentor and provide hands-on support for parents. Noral researched and created a list of national and regional organizations – serving African American, Hispanic and the general public – as a target segment for outreach efforts. We designed kit packaging, print advertising and web banners to promote the resources in a visually-appealing manner. Noral also repurposed the kit components into a facilitator training program for community leaders seeking help running parent workshops using these kit materials.
Results
Once the kits are printed, Noral will begin personalized outreach and follow-up to continuously engage leaders and organizations from various sectors of the community nationwide, and ensure parents are receiving the assistance they need and desire. OWH has been so pleased to-date that Noral’s work has been used to inform efforts on another contract.
